5 Delicious Primal Veggies 0

Posted on June 18, 2012 by Lisa

Sometimes when we start a new healthy diet we get  stuck in a rut after a few weeks.  We find ourselves eating the same food repeatedly and we get a little bored with our food choices.  This is when it’s time to shake things up a little!

Here are 5 unique vegetables to spice up your meal plans:

1.  Radishes.   These are a vegetable that I didn’t pay much attention to for a long long time.  But they are quite the little power house!  Full of flavor, eat them raw or cooked.  The entire radish is edible.  Most of us eat the bulb part but you can eat radish leaves as greens in your salad or you can eat radish sprouts.  Yum!  If your salad needs a little zest reach for a radish.

2. Eggplant.  Eggplant is a fabulous substitute for noodles in pasta dishes like lasagne, it can be grilled and fried and seasoned.  Mmmm

3. Napa.  You might not have heard of this cabbage before.  It’s an Asian cabbage that can be made into raw salad or cooked in a stir fry.  Either way, it’s delicious!  You can get some ideas of what to do with napa here.

4. Dulse.  Chewy, salty, tangy…delicious.  This seaweed is a highly nutritious.  This one is a favorite of mine.  Being from Atlantic Canada, I’ve been eating dulse my whole life.  Dulse is grown in the mid tidal zone and is a deep reddish-purple color.   It might be an “acquired taste,” but if you don’t try it you won’t know whether or not you like it!  I personally enjoy dulse all by itself.  It’s a perfect movie snack!

5. Jicama – pronounced hicama.  This is  a root vegetable that tastes like apple or water chestnut and it can be used in a variety of ways: sweet or savory.  You can eat it raw or cooked.  Some people make it into “hash browns” and you can even eat it deep fried with cinnamon sprinkled on top.      Give it a try.  Maybe as an addition to a tossed salad.  Or make your own tasty snack:  jicama chips!

Living Primal – A Daily Choice 1

Posted on June 02, 2012 by Lisa

Living a primal lifestyle is a daily choice. In fact it’s an hourly choice. And when temptation calls, it’s a minute by minute choice.

Truly, like any other commitment, you need to have conviction to stick with it.

The best way to stick with something and commit to it is to believe in it. Primal living is a choice. No one is making me do it.

So, why am I doing it?

Well if you read my posts 5 Things that Happened To Me As a Result of Starting a Primal Lifestlye  and 5 Things that Happened to Me When I Stopped Following the Primal Lifestyle you’d see it’s a No-Brainer.

My personal experience of living both ways is that Primal makes me feel better and look better.  Why would I choose not to do it?   Good question.  I think it boils down to a 2 things:

1. Laziness:  sometimes it’s easier to give in to convenience and eat whatever is available.  Intermittent Fasting  (I.F.)would be a better choice for me because of reason #2.

2. Cravings:  once I have a taste of sugar I whet my appetite for it and it calls me.  I, myself, am better off without small amounts of sugary treats because they open the flood gates.

So, if I can defeat Laziness and choose I.F. over convenience I think I’ll have this problem solved in the long run.

It’s important to me, because it makes me feel better.  Off to have some Broccoli Cheddar soup….mmmm delicious and Primally-nutritious.
