Deprivation Doesn’t Deliver

Posted on February 11, 2012 by Lisa

When it comes to dieting, I have a little experience.  It’s a mind game.  And where food is involved, I have a very weak resolve.

I’m guilty of having zero self-discipline in this area.  I just can’t seem to deprive myself of eating yummy treats.  So, rather than deprive it’s better to manage.  Manage portions that is.

I also have the good fortune of having the opportunity to share lots of my meal times with friends and family.  This is enriching for sure, but it also can lead to less control over my diet.

In order to not feel deprived I’m learning to enjoy all of the delicious dishes presented to me on these social eating occasions.  But enjoy them in moderatio; or even in very small amounts:  Moderation for reasonable food selections and very small amounts for decadent high calorie selections.

It’s hard at first to accept a small portion of something so delicious.  But, I have found that if you slow down and enjoy each and every bite; if you really experience the way the food feels on your palate it can be fulfilling to eat a very small amount.  Give it a try, let me know what you think!
